The Age’s Wrong Skin wins Podcast of the Year at the 2019 Australian Podcast Awards
The Age’s Wrong Skin has been named Podcast of the Year at the 2019 Australian Podcast Awards.
The nation’s biggest podcasting celebration was held at Sydney’s Seymour Centre on Saturday night, with a packed audience to see $10,000 worth of prizes awarded to the best podcasts in the industry.
Wrong Skin explores the unsolved suspicious death of Julie Buck and the missing body of Richard Milgin in the outback Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is a story about a relationship banned under traditional Aboriginal law.
“Wrong Skin was an immensely challenging project which pushed boundaries of storytelling and production that we had not experienced before. It is testament to the talent in The Age newsroom that not only were these challenges overcome, the result was a compelling, groundbreaking and important podcast,” said Alex Lavelle, Editor of The Age.
The 10-episode podcast also took home the Investigative Journalism & True Crime Award, making Wrong Skin a multiple winning podcast on the night, almost one year from its launch, led by The Age’s Richard Baker.
“Richard Baker’s courage and determination in telling the story were matched by the dedication and creativity of Greg Muller, Rachael Dexter, Tim Young and Siobhan McHugh in producing the series. A long list of others from all parts of the business who contributed to its success should also be proud,” said Tom McKendrick, Head of Audio & Video at The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald.
Richard Baker, Investigative Reporter at The Age said “telling the story of Richard and Julie would have been impossible without the trust and co-operation of many members of the Kimberley community of Looma.”
“This award is a testament to their courage in trying to finally find answers to the tragic circumstances of 1994. The award strengthens my view that podcasting is one of the strongest ways to connect with an audience and deliver investigative journalism through personal stories.”
