Selling the country dream at The Block grand finale auction
More than $20 million worth of prime Aussie heartland will go under the hammer at The Block: Tree Change Grand Finale Auction, airing Sunday, November 6, at 7 O’Block on Channel 9 and 9Now.
In the biggest set of auctions the show has ever seen, five of our Blockhead couples, Tom and Sarah-Jane (Vic), Rachel and Ryan (NSW), Ankur and Sharon (Vic), Dylan and Jenny (Qld), and Oz and Omar (NSW), will find out if their back-breaking work, the freezing temperatures, and all that mud was worth it.
The couples have spent 12 weeks building 500-square metre homesteads complete with tennis courts, pools and even a winery on 10 acres of land each in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges – the biggest properties in Block history.
Host Scott Cam said this season’s move to the countryside was by far the most challenging thing the show has done in its 18-season run.
“This is by far the toughest season that I’ve ever worked on. We upped the ante with the biggest blocks ever, and very harsh country weather conditions,” he said.
“To their credit, our Blockheads have produced some stunning five-bedroom houses on 10 acres each – they’ve really built the country dream for five lucky Aussie families.
“Anything can happen on auction day, but we’re gunning for them to each take home some money. They all deserve it after this year’s slog.”
Domain National Managing Editor, Alice Stolz, said: The cool change that swept through Australia’s property market has resulted in a much more temperate spring. Interest rates are rising and house prices are softening – it’s undoubtedly a buyer’s market,” she said.
“What bodes well for The Block contestants is that renovated turnkey properties remain the more desired property type, with many buyers spooked by rising construction costs and significant delays for materials.
“All five teams have built what many Aussies dream of, and although it was an incredibly tough season, their greatest test will ultimately commence when the auction bell rings.”
The Block co-creator and Executive Producer, Julian Cress, said: “The houses our contestants have created are amongst the best homes The Block has ever offered for sale, but we’re selling more than 50 acres of property in one day in what’s proving to be a very volatile market. These factors mean we’re in for a nailbiting finale – it’s really anyone’s game.”
The all-important auction order and reserve prices will also be revealed on auction night. With Tom and Sarah-Jane winning six room reveals, they earned the right to decide the auction order, which could make or break the other Blockheads’ fortunes.
The auction order could have serious implications for the crowning of winners of The Block: Tree Change, who will take home a $100,000 cash prize on top of whatever profit their home makes above reserve on auction day.
Since premiering on Channel 9 in 2003, Australia’s richest reality program has awarded a total of $28,771,471 in prizemoney.
