Ray Hadley to call record 34th NRL Grand Final

Radio broadcasting legend Ray Hadley will call his 34th NRL Grand Final this Sunday, eclipsing the radio record he currently shares with the late rugby league icon, Frank Hyde MBE, OAM.

Hyde called 33 NSWRL Grand Finals from the Sydney Cricket Ground between 1953 and 1983 (including replays of the 1977 and 1978 Grand Finals) on Sydney radio station 2SM.

Hadley’s first Grand Final call was on 2UE in 1987, where Manly – coached by the late Bob Fulton – defeated the Canberra Raiders, coached by Wayne Bennett and Don Furner.

Ray Hadley and Frank Hyde

Ray Hadley said: “When I started calling Rugby League in 1987, John Brennan asked Frank Hyde to listen and critique me on a weekly basis. In the early stages, Frank said ‘you need to get into a rhythm, you sound like a race caller’. I replied ‘that’s because I am!’. He laughed and said you’ll get there. At the end of 1987, he called me after the Grand Final and said ‘there’ll be no more phone calls from me – you are where you need to be’.

“I got an email from one of Frank and Gabby’s sons, Pat, this week telling me how proud his dad would be for me to break his record by calling my 34th Grand Final. The entire Hyde family has always been very supportive. My lasting memory of Frank will be his generosity and encouragement. He was not threatened by an ambitious young bloke, but rather proud he was part of my journey. Surely Frank must be the next media person to be elevated to the NRL Hall of Fame.”

Greg Byrnes, Nine Radio Head of Content, said: “The records keep coming for Ray Hadley. In recent times we’ve celebrated 21 years of Ray on 2GB Mornings, then 151 consecutive survey wins, and this weekend it’s a record 34th Grand Final call. What a privilege it is for us all to witness one of the greats of radio broadcasting in full flight!”

Hadley and Hyde are both inductees in the Commercial Radio Hall of Fame and their famous catch-cries will forever live in rugby league history; Hyde’s “It’s long enough, it’s high enough… and it’s straight between the posts!” and Hadley’s, “Don’t touch the set, don’t touch the dial, don’t you go anywhere!”.

Ray Hadley’s record 34th NRL Grand Final call can be heard on 2GB Sydney and 4BC Brisbane on Sunday 1 October 2023. Coverage begins from 1.00pm (AEDT) with the NRL Grand Final between Penrith Panthers and Brisbane Broncos kicking off at 7.30pm (AEDT).

Anthony Albanese, Don Farrell and Sam Kerr top AFR Magazine’s Power List

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been named as Australia’s most powerful person, according to The Australian Financial Review Magazine’s Power List. Trade Minister Don Farrell has vaulted to the top of the list of covert power players, while Matilda’s captain Sam Kerr is the most powerful cultural influence in the nation.

Images of all three have been created for the magazine through artificial intelligence: the Prime Minister is depicted deejaying, Farrell is shown meeting with aliens and Kerr is seen holding aloft a world cup trophy. Other Power Listers depicted through AI in the magazine include the new Reserve Bank Governor Michele Bullock, Opposition leader Peter Dutton, ACTU Secretary Sally McManus, Chair of News Corp and Fox Corporation Lachlan Murdoch, cricket captain Pat Cummins and actor Margot Robbie

“It’s been almost a year since the release of ChatGPT which heralded that the AI-revolution has well and truly begun,” said AFR Magazine editor Matthew Drummond. “In addition to taking photographs of the people who appear on our Power lists, we figured it was timely to use AI to generate images of them as well. In this way the issue reveals how far this rapidly-evolving technology has come.”

The AFR Magazine gatefold cover featuring an AI generated image on the left and a photo on the right.

The split-run gatefold cover features both a portrait of the Prime Minister – taken for the issue – and a fake image generated by AI. Some readers will have the real photo on the cover, while others will see the AI image first.

“All of our AI images are clearly labelled as such and while they’re not perfect likenesses, the likeness is often uncanny,” Mr Drummond said. “The potential for misuse of AI to generate fake images of famous and powerful people is an emerging risk, especially in today’s image-led culture where so much information is consumed quickly on social media. Perhaps this issue will spur on business leaders, cultural leaders and politicians to think more urgently about those risks, and what can be done to reduce them.”

The Power List consists of three main categories – Overt, Covert and Cultural – which are debated at length by two separate panels of well-connected insiders drawn from Australia’s political, business and cultural spheres.

The magazine’s Power Panel placed Treasurer Jim Chalmers in second place on the Overt List, and Foreign Affairs Minister, Penny Wong third. ACTU Secretary Sally McManus is ranked fourth, illustrating the power the trade movement has within the government. New Reserve Bank Governor, Michele Bullock is ranked fifth, while newcomer Noel Pearson is eighth, highlighting his influence in the lead up to the referendum.

Trade Minister, Don Farrell, takes out the top spot on the Covert List, followed by Anthony Albanese’s Chief of Staff, Tim Gartrell. Debuting on the Covert List are Macquarie Group’s CEO Shemara Wikramanayke, Finance Minister Katy Gallagher and mining magnate Gina Rinehart.

Panellists who decided the Overt and Covert Lists were Joel Fitzgibbon and Christopher Pyne – both former ministers – Scott Morrison’s former private secretary, Yaron Finkelstein, company directors, Yasmin Allen and Nicola Wakefield Evans, pollsters Sue Vercoe and Anthony Reed, data strategist, Annie O’Rourke, and Labor insiders Ryan Liddell and Lidija Ivanovski.

The panel that decided the Cultural Power list included Warner Music Australasia President, Dan Rosen, Foxtel’s Chief content and commercial officer, Amanda Laing, Ogilvy Australia’s head of culture and influence Liana Rossi, Adelaide Writers’ Week Director, Louise Adler and Powerhouse Museum’s CEO, Lisa Havilah.

Leading the Cultural Power list is Matilda’s superstar striker Sam Kerr, followed by actor and star of the Barbie movie, Margot Robbie. Prominent Coalition Senator Jacinta Price and Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe feature in the Top 10 alongside musician Troye Sivan, television presenter Tony Armstrong and Bluey creator Joe Brumm

Nine’s premium podcasts: audience growth and industry awards

In an incredible month for 9Podcasts, 9News Queensland production of Hannah’s Story claimed the Kennedy Award for Outstanding Podcast of the Year, and Anthony ‘Huddo’ Hudson’s Nothin’ Like the 90’s was awarded Best Podcast at the Australian Football Media Awards.

Both productions are industry-leading examples of the powerful storytelling medium of podcasts, and the quality of the Nine Podcast Network. Hannah’s Story continues to be recognised for the powerful voice it gives to Hannah Clarke’s loved ones, the first responders on the scene, witnesses, domestic violence experts and political leaders;  delving into the shocking murders and igniting a crucial community conversation about coercive control. Huddo’s Nothin Like the 90’s takes a lighter approach, entertaining and educating listeners by bringing the decade of iconic footy back into the modern day, as he speaks to the biggest players, coaches and personalities that made AFL in the 90’s so pure.

These award-winning productions contributed to the Nine Podcast Network posting its second highest monthly audience in August 2023, with over 1.7 million monthly listeners across the slate of premium Australian podcasts.

Married at First Sight UK returns for its biggest season yet

Hold onto your bouquet as the UK version of the world’s favourite marital experiment, Married at First Sight UK, returns for a brand new season on Friday, September 29, streaming exclusively for Australian viewers on 9Now, with a new episode dropping daily from Monday to Thursday.

Season eight is set to be the most explosive yet and bigger than ever before. With a total of 36 episodes, it will be its largest and longest series to date, filled with mayhem, love, laughter and drama.

Relationship experts Paul C. BrunsonCharlene Douglas and Australia’s own Mel Schilling will once again be at the helm of the social experiment, matching and guiding the couples through their journey as the participants put their trust in them when they marry a total stranger.

Mel Schilling said “I’m excited to introduce this latest season of MAFS UK to the Aussie fan base. This year we have the most diverse set of brides and grooms, including our first ever trans bride and a bride with a disability. Once again, the experiment is full of all your typical favourite MAFS moments, but with a whole bunch of UK accents. Aussies, you’re going to love it.”

Relationships will be tested as the new crop of brides and grooms embark on lavish honeymoons, move in together, and are put under the microscope by the other married couples at the weekly dinner parties, while the experts will hold them to account at the weekly commitment ceremonies.

The 16 brave singles walking down the aisle and entering the experiment this season are:

The Brides: clinic consultant Ella (29) who makes history as the show’s first-ever trans contestant, childcare assistant Tasha (25), performing arts teacher Shona (31), florist Rosaline (28), executive assistant Porscha (36), technology risk partner Peggy (32), finance manager Laura (34) and sales manager Jay (31).

The Grooms: investment communications Thomas (27), youth worker and DJ Terence (40), account manager Paul (26), marketing and events manager Nathanial (36), sales executive Luke (30), sports rehabilitator Georges (30), model Brad (27) and tennis coach Arthur (34).

In a season set to be like no other, pop the champagne and get ready for your MAFS UK fix.
